Michigan Ice
The only rink in two hours.
The brief
They grew up on frozen lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan — outdoor rinks, borrowed skates, cocoa that tasted like the paper cup. Then they moved south for work, had kids, and spent three winters explaining that no, there isn’t ice here. Not in town. Not for about two hours in any direction. So they built a rink in Arkansas and named it after the winter they missed. Michigan Ice is not a geography lesson. It is the souvenir they packed in the truck.
What it had to live on
A building you can find from the highway. A ticket that feels like a night out. A cocoa cup people keep in the car. Staff jackets that look kind, not like a rec-league sponsor. The whole place dressed — System, 48 hours — because the ice is the product and the lobby is how you decide to come back next Friday.
Who it's for
Parents who want twinkle instead of another arcade. Couples who would rather hold hands on cold ice than sit in the bowling alley glow. Kids who have never seen their breath indoors. The town already has two arcades and a bowling alley for “what do we do tonight.” Michigan Ice has to win the people who miss winter — even the ones who have never had a real one.
What the brief told the generator to feel
They wanted the night they grew up on, built in a town that does not get it for free. Friday public skate. Saturday lessons. Cocoa that is actually good. A sign you can read at 45 miles an hour so out-of-town grandparents do not miss the turn. Cheerful, kind, a little festive — and still a place you would drive past in July and think, good, they’re open. They are the only ice in two hours. That fact does the shouting. The identity just has to feel like winter without lying about the calendar.
What the generator had to refuse
The constraints
Rink generators default to a skate. Then a Santa hat on the blade. Then a pond. That is the clip-art pack that comes with the word rink. Worse: it makes the place about the sport instead of the feeling they moved south to rebuild. Loud wants candy-red nightclub. Quiet went civic navy and drew a map of Michigan — the rink is in Arkansas. A map is a wrong story. The name had to generate as the souvenir: warm against cold in one picture, and a road that only says Michigan Ice.
One building brief, three nights. Loud: candy-red voltage, competing with the arcade. Quiet: civic navy plus a Michigan map the generator got helpful about. Middle: cream, cocoa, ice, one gold wink. Middle locked. MICHIGAN in cocoa — the memory. ICE in ice blue — the product. No skate. No slogan on the pole.
Three generations
Same ice. Three nights. You tap the building you can live in from September to May — and the one that still looks right in July.
Loud generation

Hot — a nightclub with ice in it
Candy red, cyan, Saturday-night voltage. The generator followed festive until it became neon. Fun if you are 19 and already going to the arcade. Wrong if you are driving a minivan at 6pm in July. They did not move south to compete with the bowling alley on light. Hot is a weekend. They built a year.
This generation locked

Middle — cocoa, ice, a gold wink
This is the winter they actually remember: cream walls, cocoa at the counter, ice you can see from the lobby, lights that twinkle without a Santa on every pole. You would bring a six-year-old. You would bring a date. You would still know the building in August. Kind. Festive-fun. Not a holiday storefront twelve months a year.
Quiet generation

Mild — the generator drew the wrong state
Civic navy. Tasteful. And a map of Michigan, because the name said Michigan and the model got helpful. The owners are from the Midwest. The ice is in Arkansas. The name is homesickness, not a highway sign for I-75. The miss is on purpose. You do not lock a map.
Why this generation locked
The name locked as the souvenir. The skate did not generate.
The run stopped drawing the sport. MICHIGAN sits in cocoa like a memory. ICE sits in ice-blue like the thing you paid for. One gold spark is the twinkle over the boards — not a second logo. The icon is warm against cold in a circle, because that is the whole story: they brought winter somewhere it does not happen by itself. The road says Michigan Ice. Nothing else. Being the only rink in two hours is the pitch. The identity just has to feel like the night they missed, on a building you can find.
The export
Same file. Every surface.

Split field
Warm against cold. That is the whole picture.
Cocoa vs ice in one circle. Gold as a wink, like the lights, not like a trophy. This is how a cup, a ticket, and a jacket carry the story without a skate. A blade would have been easier. Easier looked like every other rink on the internet.

Generated onto the real stuff
The brief named the objects. The run put the lock there.

Cocoa
The cup is half the night.
They talked about cocoa like it was on the same list as the ice. It is. You skate, you thaw your hands, you keep the cup in the cupholder on the way home. Split field on the sleeve. No skate. No slogan around the rim. The drink is the souvenir you can still hold in July.

Staff
Kind has to be wearing something.
The people at the glass are part of the winter — lesson kids, rental skates, the extra cocoa. The jacket cannot look like a rec-league sponsor or a nightclub. Same split. Same name. Somebody’s kid should want to work here at sixteen.

Poster
Announce the night. Let the name do it.
Friday public skate does not need a made-up line on a pole. The name is the headline. “Only ice in two hours” is what you say in the parking lot, not what we locked under the mark. The poster just has to look like the building.

Bold sans, outlined, stacked. Humanist sans in the kit for hours and tickets — never as a fake lock. No script ice-lettering. No clip-art skate.
Your turn
Three generations. You tap one. Still no call.
